A “meta” version of the character appears with other Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). When some of the princesses describe to Vanellope von Schweetz how they stare at “important water” to gain inspiration for their songs, Moana says she stares at the ocean. Later, when Ralph is falling from a tower and needs saving by the princesses, Moana causes water from a fountain to spiral upwards so that Elsa can freeze it into a slide to slow Ralph’s fall, saying “You’re Welcome” after saving him. After Moana had an argument with her father over sailing beyond the reef to find more fish, she was comforted by Pua who tried to convince her sail into the ocean to look for more fish. Moana was hesitant and wanted to commit to her people and duties, but ultimately decided to try sailing to look for fish with Pua accompanying her. However, due to Moana sailing for the first time, their attempt to look for fish failed when they got hit by a wave, causing Pua to fall overboard.
However, Maui first needs to retrieve his fishhook in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters, from Tamatoa, a giant coconut crab. While Moana distracts Tamatoa, Maui retrieves his hook, only to find himself unable to control his shape-shifting. He is overpowered by Tamatoa, but Moana’s quick thinking allows them to escape with the hook. Maui reveals his first tattoo was earned when his human parents abandoned him as an infant, and the gods, taking pity on him, granted him his powers. After reassurance from Moana, Maui teaches her the art of way-finding, regaining control of his powers, and the two grow closer.

Moana loves her sister dearly, and Simea wants to be just like Moana when she’s older.
Meanwhile, Maui is seeking Motufetu himself since he had a previous quarrel with Nalo, but he is captured by Nalo’s enforcer, Matangi.
After Moana was comforted and motivated by her grandmother’s spirit to continue her journey, Moana was still accompanied by Heihei as she resumed her quest.
Maui lost both the heart and his magic fish hook to the depths of the sea.
A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of Motunui’s chief Tui, to return the heart to Te Fiti.

After Moana gets struck by lightning, her ancestors revive her as a demigoddess and give her a magical tattoo.
As Moana breaks down in tears, she is visited by Gramma Tala’s spirit, who comforts and apologizes to her granddaughter for placing so much pressure on her.
Moana and Maui escape them and Moana convinces Maui to help her by saying Maui is no longer a hero and should redeem himself by returning the heart.
When Moana became hesitant in returning home, Tala began singing a song in which she explained the positive traits she saw in Moana while giving her words of wisdom.
Maui encourages Moana to use her new skills and sail the rest of the way, and with the demigod’s teachings in mind, Moana makes it to Te Fiti, much to the delight of a prideful Maui.
Moana orders him to return the heart, but upon seeing it, Maui tries to leave the boat, only to be brought back by the ocean.

On her return from one such voyage, Moana is given the title of tautai, or master wayfinder — Motunui’s first tautai in a thousand years. Nalo’s sea monsters turn out to be almost too much for the crew and Moni almost dies. Moana is devastated and loses faith in herself, but Maui manages to inspire her. Together the crew face Nalo with the humans distracting Nalo so that Maui can raise the island. The plan goes astray so Moana dives in and successfully touches the sunken island, breaking the curse.

As they continued their journey after retrieving Maui’s Fish Hook from Tamatoa, Moana and Heihei watched Maui regain control of his shapeshifting abilities. When Heihei ate Maui when turned into a beetle, Moana was horrified until Maui turned back into his true form, with Heihei stuck on his finger. After surviving an encounter with Te Ka, the first thing Moana did was check to see if Heihei was okay before checking on Maui, leading her to get an argument with him over his hook getting damaged. The next morning, after discovering to have arrived at Maui’s Island, Moana and Heihei met Maui who was forced by the Ocean to allow Moana to accompany her. When attacked by the Kakamora, Moana witnessed them kidnap Heihei after he foolishly swallowed the Heart of Te Fiti when it fell out of her necklace. Despite Maui refusing to help her and being outnumbered by the Kakamora, Moana was determined to rescue Heihei and retrieve the Heart.
On the Polynesian island of Motunui, the inhabitants worship the goddess of nature, Te Fiti; a living island who, long ago, brought life to the ocean using a pounamu stone as her heart and the source of her power. One day, Maui, the shape-shifting demigod of the wind and sea and master of wayfinding, stole Te Fiti’s heart to give humanity the power of creation. Moana 2 premiered at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute in Kapolei, Hawaii, on November 21, 2024, and was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in the United States Moana on November 27. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $1.059 billion worldwide, outgrossing its predecessor and becoming the third highest-grossing film of 2024. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards.

Upon being unable to find Te Fiti, Moana realizes Te Kā is Te Fiti, but corrupted without her heart. The ocean clears a path for Moana, allowing her to return the heart to Te Fiti, who heals the ocean and islands of blight. Maui apologizes to Te Fiti, who fixes his hook as well as Moana’s boat before falling into a deep sleep and becoming an island. Gramma Tala finds Moana on the beach after she tries to sail past the reef only to become shipwrecked back home and shows Moana a secret cave hidden behind a waterfall. Tala then gives Moana the heart of Te Fiti after showing her the curse of draining life away from trees and the island itself, saying that it is the only way to save her people.

They are attacked by Kakamora, coconut pirates who seek the heart, but Moana and Maui outwit them. Moana premiered during the AFI Fest at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 14, 2016, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 23. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $687 million worldwide. She learns that Maui has stolen the heart for a village that he has looked after once he was given his powers from the gods. Through some encouragement from Moana, Maui is given the strength to shape shift with ease, even managing to turn into a hawk. She ignores his protest, which brings Te Kā to partially destroy Maui’s hook, severely damaging it and sending them far back across the ocean.
Despite her sudden feeling of self-doubt, Moana follows Maui into Lalotai, and eventually finds the fishhook. She distracts Tamatoa long enough for Maui to take back his hook, but the demigod finds that his shapeshifting abilities are out of whack. Feeling powerful, Tamatoa attacks Maui and imprisons Moana to prevent her from interfering. As she watches helplessly, Tamatoa taunts Maui on his hidden insecurities and alludes to a tragic past. As such information was previously unknown to her, Moana is confused by Tamatoa’s words.
Maui is also given his demigod powers and tattoos back, including Mini Maui, and together, they are able to raise Motufetu. Maui encourages Moana to use her new skills and sail the rest of the way, and with the demigod’s teachings in mind, Moana makes it to Te Fiti, much to the delight of a prideful Maui. Maui then takes the heart and flies to Te Fiti, but he is immediately attacked by Te Kā and quickly defeated. Landing back on the boat, Maui urges Moana to turn back for their own safety, but Moana refuses, unwilling to back away after coming so close to accomplishing their goal.

Inspired by Polynesian mythology, Moana is depicted as the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a Polynesian village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti. When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people. She then forms a crew and embarks on a voyage to recover the lost island of Motufetu and restore the channels that connected the people of the sea. Moana and her parents rush to the healers, where Tala lies on her deathbed. She encourages Moana to find Maui and restore the heart with her last ounce of strength.
She fought and outsmarted the pirates, managing to rescue Heihei where the two managed to escape and jump back onto their boat, with Heihei spitting out the Heart upon hitting the canoe’s mast. After escaping from and defeating the Kakamora, Moana and Heihei continued their journey with Maui reluctantly accompanying them. Moana first met Heihei when she was a toddler and shared a close relationship with him while growing up on Motunui.
Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu. Her morale restored, and with Loto having repaired their raft with materials from Tautai Vasa’s, they head for Motufetu, with the plan being for Maui to raise the island, then Moana will touch it, breaking the curse. They confront Te Kā, who Moana manages to outsmart in order to make it past Te Fiti’s barrier islands. Moana is thrown off her boat and is nearly killed by the lava demon until Maui suddently returns.
The demigod uses some of his remaining power to shape-shift into a hawk and fly off into the night. Moana tries conquering the reef, but is overpowered by the tides and shipwrecked. That afternoon, Moana’s grandmother Tala shows her a secret cavern of ships and reveals Motunui’s people were voyagers until Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart; the ocean was no longer safe without it. Tala explains Te Kā’s darkness is destroying the island, but can be cured if Moana finds Maui and has him restore the heart of Te Fiti.
